  • Orangutan Experience

    Visit the BorneoOrangutan Survival sanctuary. An experience of a lifetime, to get up close with these beautiful primates and find out how they are prepared to return to their natural habitat.

    At Samboja, you can visit the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) sanctuary. An experience of a lifetime, to get up close with these beautiful primates. The BOS Foundation is currently taking care of around 750 orangutans in a conservation area of some 80 km2. The orangutans have been rescued from areas of conflict, where they lost their natural habitat. You can witness the orangutans in the conservation area at several orangutan islands at feeding times.

    In the sanctuary, you can also learn how the orphaned orangutans are equipped with the skills they need to survive once they are old enough to be reintroduced in the forest. In fact, they go to orangutan school and learn the skills of building nests, selecting foods, and recognizing predators. Some of the orangutans will not return to the forest due to illness or injury. They stay in the sanctuary and get long term care.

    When visiting the orangutan sanctuary you can select from several tour options including visits to sunbear sanctuary, bukit bangkirai and boating activities on the Black River. You can stay overnight at the sanctuary in the beautiful Samboja lodge.

    In the nurseries, you can work with seeds, seedlings and cuttings. Here you will learn how to handle these delicate little beginnings and nurture them to maturity.

    If you are more interested to work with data, you can also assist our researchers to collect data regarding tree growth, water volume, water flow velocity, humidity and temperature. It helps us to better understand the environment and the changes that are taking place.

    An inspiring Dayak experience centre is located in the centre of Tenggarong city on the Kumala island in the Mahakam river.

    You can also engage in traditional Dayak activities. Develop your talent as a Dayak dancer, up your hunting skills with a traditional blowpipe and learn the details about Dayak tattoos. You can also make your own Dayak mask.

    Facilities include a Dayak art gallery, souvenir shop, coffee shop.

    A visit to the Dayak experience center is family friendly. It can easlily be reached by ferry or through the bridge connecting the Tenggarong city centre with Kumala island.

    Sultanate palace and Kutai Kingdom tombs

    In the sultanate palace, you can see the king’s throne, royal jewellery and learn the history of the oldest Hindu Kingdom.

    The Kutai kingdom tombs are just next door. There are 249 tombs of Kutai kings and relatives, among which, the tomb of Aji Imbut, founder of Tenggarong city.

    The sultanate palace and kingdom toms are located in the city centre of Tenggarong and within walking distance from the Wooden mosque and Kedaton.

    The museum has a number of miniature Dayak longhouses in display. Marvels of traditional wooden architecture. On top of that, you can get eye-to-eye with 2 preserved crocodiles. The two river monsters attacked villagers in the 1990s. Newspaper clippings and photos displayed in the museum give you all the frightening details.

    The wood museum is located just outside the city centre of Tenggarong, at some 10 minutes drive.

    Kedaton

    The Kedaton Kutai Kartanegara was originally meant to be the residence of the Sultan, but has been transformed into a cultural centre to preserve art and culture.

  • Spot the rare river dolphin

    Ride a boat in the beautiful Borneo nature reserve of Muara Kaman and go on the look out for the rare river dolphin. In the meantime, enjoy proboscis, long tail monkeys and exotic birds ashore.

    You can spot the river dolphin in the Mahakam river, Kedang Kepala and Kedang Rantau creeks or the Semayang lake. The Mahakam dolphin is an endangered species. Currently there are less than 100 dolphins left.

    When you go for the dolphin spotting, don’t forget to enjoy the other beautiful wildlife that you can see ashore. The Muara Kaman nature
    reserve offers you a beautiful adventure ecotourism experience. It is rich with proboscis monkeys, long tail monkeys, snakes, and many exotic birds including hawkeagles.
    You can combine your dolphin adventure with a fishing trip with the local fishermen on the Semayang lake and visit traditional Dayak villages.

    Muara Kaman nature reserve is about 3 hours drive from Samarinda.

    Dayak village Lekaq Kidau

    Go into the heart of Borneo and meet the friendly and colourful Dayak Kenyah tribe in Lekaq Kidau. Witness and learn their unique art performances, handicrafts, and dances. The Kenyah Dayak are nowadays mostly farmers. The women are engaged in handicrafts and make fashion accessories from beads and products from rattan.

    The village can be reached by boat from Samarinda or Tenggarong.

    Muara Muntai boardwalk village

    Don’t miss a visit to the unique candy-coloured stilt village of Muara Muntai. The charming wooden village is built over a swamp has an 8 km wooden board walk connecting the different areas in the village.

    Muara Muntai is a fishing village where you can stay in one of the guesthouses and enjoy the local fresh water fish. It is also the last place along the Mahakam to buy any supplies, if you plan to wander further into Borneo.

    The village is at around two hours from Kota Bangun.

    Swimming swamp buffaloes

    Witness hundreds of Borneo swamp buffalo on their morning swim in the river. It is a spectacular daily routine and part of the buffalo farming in the Mahakam upriver area. The buffaloes go in a convoy to the river and return after their swim to the land. Guided by a herd keeper in a motorboat.

    The swimming buffaloes can be found in the villages of Teluk Maridan, Muara Muntai, and Lebak Singkil.
